The FS team made sure to include a special request of mine, which was photos of our families on their wedding days in silver frames at the cocktail hour. Cocktails were in The Living Room, which was so cozy and full of warmth - Exactly what we had envisioned for our wedding. We did our first look in the Garden, and all I can say is WOW. I love her so much I see her as my stylist! The venue itself is breathtaking! We opted to have our ceremony + reception inside due to weather (Lauren kept me posted throughout the entire morning to make sure we loved the final result!) and it truly was magical, the room was glowing and the team was so fluid in their transition from the pool area to the indoor space. Bridgette Hill at the FS Palm Beach Spa is a goddess - She is the master who tamed my hair to be absolute flawless perfection for my wedding day - She took my vision (VS model, of course) and brought it to life. Our guests were singing the praises of the incredible appetizers (which Lauren and Pascale made sure we had access to as the bride & groom - so thoughtful!), main course, and cake for months (no joke!) after our wedding day. Lauren Renwick, the Catering Manager, is an absolute angel - She is immensely talented, and there was no detail left unaccounted for thanks to her professionalism, diligence, and love for her work! Just a preview: Delicious surprises in the room when we arrived for our wedding weekend, monogrammed goodies (I melted) that she must have snuck up there during the reception (Lauren, you are incredible!), two pieces of our wedding cake in the room fridge to enjoy the next day, and more that I do not want to take the surprise from for future brides! While on the subject of food, let's be honest, you cannot beat the Four Seasons! The culinary team at FS Palm Beach is outstanding - They are highly awarded with good reason. Do yourself a favor and consider this as your wedding venue, as it is nothing short of magical. Uly are exceptional in every way! Our initial venue fell through due to being bought by an external entity, and long story short Colin (the GM at the time) went above and beyond to welcome us and make what could have been an incredibly disappointing and stressful time smooth and fabulous. We are eternally grateful for our experience and will continue to looking forward to our next trip to Four Seasons Palm Beach! Read More This hotel and team does not miss a beat! As we had many out of town guests, the very strong majority of our wedding stayed at the hotel for the weekend. Our guests would not stop raving about the service, food and experience they had. The operation was FLAWLESS and it showed. We will always think of this weekend as the true best of our life!īeyond Lauren, I could go on endlessly about the customer service provided by every staff member-from entry at valet, concierge and check in, housekeeping, restaurant hostesses and servers, personnel at the spa, pool and beach, and all incredible members of our catering/events team. Molecules and small particles in the atmosphere change the direction of light rays, causing them to scatter. “In the crepuscular lobby, a broad circle of monitors laid on their backs on the floor blinked up at a laser show spiraling across a tentlike scrim stretched just below the building’s blacked-out skylight. The colors of the sunset result from a phenomenon called scattering, says Steven Ackerman, professor of meteorology at UW–Madison. “I’ve been through their checkout and noted its resemblance to Hades – the crepuscular gloom, the dungeon lighting, the mile-long shuffling queue, the glum, sickly faces, the trolleys piled high with flat-pack cardboard units.” “The story is told from a more joyous point of view - from a point of view comparatively humorous - and a number of objects and incidents touched with the light of the profane world - the vulgar, many-coloured world of actuality, as distinguished from the crepuscular realm of the writer’s own reveries - are mingled with its course.” “Crepuscular” is probably more common in scientific writing than elsewhere, but it’s hardly surprising that such an evocative word has refused those constraints, breaking free into metaphors and literature: The different feelings of the two words is nicely captured in their etymology crepuscular ultimately derives from the Latin word creper, meaning dark, dusky, doubtful and uncertain, while twilight comes from Germanic roots which mean something like ‘half light’. Crepuscular, with its gentle, crackling sound and tinge of unfamiliarity has just the right qualities to evoke that mysterious pause between night and day. Twilight is certainly a wonderful word, bringing to mind the quiet stillness of a fading day, but it doesn’t fully capture the secrets of those hours. There’s a certain quality of light at dusk and dawn, when the sun is still illuminating the atmosphere even though the surface is shrouded in darkness. The twelve hour day comes from the decision of ancient Egyptians to divide the day into ten sunlit hours and two extra twilight hours. Crepuscular rays, which stand out against the unlit air around them, are most easily seen around twilight, when the contrast between light and dark is most obvious. Incidentally, I learned the word ‘vespertine’ (from the Latin vesper=”evening star, evening”) while researching this post and immediately fell in love with it! It feels like the perfect word for all things evening - probably because of its resonance with ‘whispers’.īeyond the world of biology, crepuscular is also used to describe rays of sunlight that stream through gaps in clouds or other obstacles. Crepuscular plants evolved to take advantage of the plentiful pollinators at dusk and dawn vespertine flowers, in particular, are often white but intensely fragrant, like the night-blooming jasmine (called “the scent of night” in Arabic). A crepuscular lifestyle probably helps many animals escape the attention of predators, who are often nocturnal or diurnal an obvious exception is house cats, which are probably responding to higher levels of human activity. Not all crepuscular creatures are active at both dawn and dusk some, like morning glory, are mainly active in the morning (matutinal) and others in the evening (vespertine), like evening primrose. Crepuscular is used to describe the many plants and animals that are active at dusk and dawn, including fireflies (which are actually beetles, not flies), moths, domestic cats, and rabbits. In fact, it comes from the Latin word for twilight, crepusculum. Ĭrepuscular is actually a very easy word to explain: it’s just an adjective for twilight. In this series, I’d like to take another approach by highlighting scientific words which have escaped the confines of jargon to reach a broader appeal because of their sound or their evocative power as metaphors. Most of the posts on this blog focus on breaching this barrier to the public’s understanding and appreciation of science. ![]() Like many other fields, science has its own style of communication full of specific jargon and guided by unwritten rules. The museum of the Middle Ages is located in the Knights' Hall. Within these ancient walls you have the opportunity to experience history at first hand. Since the late Middle Ages it was the seat of the Counts of Gorizia, also known as the Meinhardins, who were among the most important noble houses of the southern Alpine region. The 11th century Gorizia Castle rises picturesquely on a hill above the town. Most of the sights are within easy walking distance. Walk through the streets of Nova Gorica and Gorizia and convince yourself of the various cultural influences that make these cities of culture so charming and unique. Since 2007, the border can be crossed at any point without controls. What could serve as better proof of transboundary cooperation and good neighborship than the joint candidacy for the Capital of Culture 2025?įortunately, if you walk along station square today, you will no longer find a metal fence. Already at that time it manifested itself in numerous cultural and sporting events, which had a positive effect on coexistence and continued even after the disintegration of Yugoslavia and still do today. The comparison is not absurd, but it is somewhat misleading, since Italy and Yugoslavia always had a good relationship regarding these cities. The eastern part of Gorizia finally became Nova Gorica, which was further developed under the urbanization project of architect Edvard Ravnikar.īecause of these circumstances, parallels have often been drawn with Berlin. To the east of the old town, west of the Jesenice-Trieste railroad line, in the form of an ordinary metal fence, the new state border between Italy and Yugoslavia ran across the station square called Piazza della Transalpina. In the Paris Peace Conference of 1947, treaties were drawn up that included border changes, as a result of which Gorizia was finally divided. In 1945, the Yugoslav partisans advanced to the Isonzo River and laid claim to the urban area east of the river. However, the city' destiny took another turn with the World War II. In 1918 Görz was again occupied by Italians until the Treaty of Saint-Germain of 1919, which regulated the dissolution of the Austrian half of the Austro-Hungarian Empire after the First World War, finally resulted in Görz falling to Italy and becoming Gorizia. In 1916, the Italians managed to conquer the city for the first time, but this was reversed the following year when it was reconquered by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Considering this demographic distribution, it is not surprising that the First World War did not pass by Görz unnoticed. A census in 1900 showed that about 63% of the population was Italian, 19% Slovenian and only 11% Austrian. ![]() They were once one city named Görz, which was under Austrian influence until 1918. Find out in this article why the title rightly goes to Italy and Slovenia and interesting facts about the turbulent history and culture of these picturesque cities at the foot of the Julian Alps.Īs the names of the cities suggest, Nova Gorica and Gorizia share much more than a title. Nova Gorica in Slovenia and Gorizia in Italy applied as twin cities for the title of European Capital of Culture 2025 and managed to compete against the rivalling Slovenian cities of Ljubljana, Piran and Ptuj. Somewhat surprising, but nevertheless true: Two cities in different countries share a title. The rhythm and meter in “The Road Not Taken” is a demonstration of Frost’s ability to break with tradition, leaving behind a lasting legacy. Robert Frost was a New Englander, a farmer, a lecturer and a poet with a use for metaphor and a mastery of form that propelled him into fame in spite of his eccentric ways. Even his final resting place, with the statement, “I had a lover’s quarrel with the world,” is a testament to Frost’s irascible manner. Often at odds with family, friends and neighbors, Frost was known to be cranky and egocentric, something that readers see in his poems. ![]() The life of Robert Frost is a study of a man who didn’t follow the pack he lived life in his own way. Sometimes, however, you might be interested in knowing more about your data set but are not interested in how each data point is related to one other, especially if you have a set of 1D points. Quadratic scatter plot: Use the quadratic regression calculator.Exponential scatter plot: Use the exponential regression calculator and.Conveniently we have the necessary tools for you at Omni! (As we told you, we DO have your back!) Here are some examples: Otherwise, you will need to expand your search to other types of correlation. That's great news because you can use our rise over run calculator to learn more about the trend line, or you can predict other pairs of values using our linear interpolation calculator. If all these tests are positive, you can be pretty confident that you have a linear scatter plot. Make sure that the Pearson correlation coefficient is close to its maximum value of 1. ![]() Make sure the errors in the slope and intercept are small.Analysis of the scatter plot: with the least squares regression line calculator you can get the mathematical parameters you need.Make sure, visually, that it looks like a line.Let me briefly guide you through the process. What does this mean? How do I know it is actually a linear scatter plot and not some other type? Simple! Well, not so simple, but at least easy if you have the right tools. However, what link or type of connection exists is not something you can be sure of by simply looking at the scatter plot or the correlation values.īut let's say you've used the scatter plot maker, and you got what seems to be a linear scatter plot. Provided you have designed a sensible experiment, it is fair to assume that strongly correlated variables are connected somehow. The important thing to remember is that, like most mathematical tools, correlation doesn't tell us anything about real-world connections it just speaks of how similarly two variables change. If it isn't, you will need to do some scatter plot correlation analysiswhich is a bit more complicated and also shares a lot in common with the last part: correlation vs causation. Just by looking at the data in a scatter plot, the correlation should be apparent. Spotting trends is the easiest part because it's part of what defines us as humans. This is not a hard rule, and things might look different depending on how you design the experiment or what you want to figure out, but it's a good starting place. The "effect" goes on the y-axis because it is the dependent variable. In such a situation, the "cause" is the independent variable and therefore goes on the x-axis. The quickest way to identify which is which is to think about the cause-effect situation. Still, in general, you want to have the independent variable on the x-axis and the dependent one on the y-axis. As we said before, it's only significant for mathematical analysis of the data. ![]() The important things to master when learning how to read a scatter plot are variable choice, trend-spotting, and knowing the difference between correlation and causation. ![]() We can define this trend mathematically, but, as humans, we've evolved to be great at spotting patterns and relationships, sometimes too good, so we can do a lot without formal analysis. This noise is what we call any deviation from the underlying trend. Here we have 30 variables that don't seem to have any relationship, but, if we plot them, we can clearly see that we are dealing with a linear scatter plot with some noise. Let's look at some scatter plot examples and learn how to interpret the results from our scatter plot maker. We told you that we have your back at Omni, and we do. What information is it showing me?ĭo not worry. It is much more important to answer the questions that come after you make a scatter plot: what does that mean? I don't know how to read a scatter plot. ![]() You might be wondering if you should learn how to create a scatter plot by hand, and we would argue against it. Now, once you have inputted all your data, the scatter plot calculator shows you your cloud of data-points. Just remember that the scatter plot chart graph gets updated with every new input (you need to input the full x-y pair) but it only starts showing values after the second input, as it's not useful to create a scatter plot one piece of data, to be honest. Unless you want to analyze your data, the order you input the variables in doesn't really matter. You just need to take your data, decide which variable will be the X-variable and which one will be the Y-variable, and simply type the data points into the calculator's fields. How to make a scatter plot? Using Omni's scatter plot calculator is very simple. ![]() Inspired by cartoons of the 1930s, the visuals and audio are painstakingly created with the same techniques of the era: traditional hand drawn cel animation, watercolour backgrounds, and original jazz recordings.
